Trailer Safety Tips

The US is one of the countries with the largest road networks in the world, making it an ideal setting for those who love to pack up their RVs and trailers and embark on adventures with family and friends

Kenda Americana Tire & Wheel shares five tips for those hitting the road.

  1. Make a pre-departure safety checklist. Check and correct tire pressure on the tow vehicle and trailer, including the spare tire, and make sure the wheel lug nuts/bolts on both vehicles are tightened to the correct torque.  Do a visual inspection for irregularities or foreign debris.
  2. It’s all about balance. Load your trailer properly – weight distribution matters, a tail-heavy trailer could cause instability. At least 60% of your load should be toward the front half of the trailer.
  3. More than arm’s distance. Knowing the proper stopping distance is key when driving. Additional weight due to your trailer and load can extend that distance as well as road surface conditions.   Prolonged use of brakes can cause overheating and loss of brake effectiveness. Giving yourself ample space to respond should help prevent frequent and/or hard braking
  4. Did you check the weather? Remember to constantly consult your weather app to anticipate any changes. Understanding your trailer tires and their traction in rain or snow should guide you as you head out into inclement conditions.
  5. Sway the right way. Gas off, brake off, steer straight, and wait. DO NOT attempt to control sway by turning the steering wheel as it will only make the issue worse. If you have a brake controller, gently apply only the trailer brakes.
